Meeting Minutes
September 18, 2007
I.      Call to order
Jim Wooster called to order a meeting of the Belmont Youth Hockey Association (BYHA) at 7:00pm in the staff room of the Belmont Public Library.
II.      Roll call
The following persons were present: Jim Wooster, Curtis Cole, Janet Liddell, John Curran, Steve Nally, Kerry O’Donovan, John Myers, Larry Christofori, Lisa Pargoli, Brian Quirk, Mark Shapiro and Andy Papthanasiou. Absent from the meeting was Doug McLaughlin.
III.      Girls’ Program Proposal:
A proposal to reduce the fee for girls skating on two Belmont Youth Hockey sponsored teams was submitted by Kerry O’Donovan and Larry Christofori and other members of the board. As proposed, this Dual Participation Discount would entice the girls currently playing on a boys’ team to also consider staying in Belmont and playing on a girls’ team in the girls program. Some of the benefits of this proposal were cited as:
a)      Retention of strong skaters in the girls program
b)      Increase in the number of skaters
c)      Ability to offer two teams at each age group instead of having strong skaters and entry level skaters on the same team.
d)     Ability to stay in Belmont to play hockey, and
e)      Opportunity to skate with their friends.
The board held an in depth discussion and debated the issues, pros and cons of offering a reduced rate for the girls program. It was generally agreed that the girls program would benefit from enhanced recruitment efforts and high quality skills instruction and coaching. However, offering a dual participation discount solely to the girls program now might be received poorly within the greater hockey membership without also addressing retention issues among “select” team players or families with multiple kids in the program. Although the proposal was defeated, the board agreed to commit time and resources to strengthen the girls program. Volunteers were organized at the meeting to recruit girls at the upcoming town soccer games this weekend. Additionally, Lisa P. will contact members of the girls’ high school hockey community to encourage them to join the younger players on the ice during practices for instructional/mentoring purposes.
IV.      Adjournment
Jim Wooster adjourned the meeting at 8:35pm.
